Writing Practice Questions

Here are some writing practice questions for you to attempt. Good luck!

Welcome to the writing practice question page! By now you should be well on the way with your IELTS preparation and we hope it is all going well! Here you will discover Task 1 and Task 2 questions, for both the General and Academic versions of the IELTS.

BE AWARE that these practice questions are on the easy side. They are here to give you a taster of what to expect.

So, here are some practice questions to get you started:

 

GENERAL VERSION

Task 1

Practice question 1

A local clothing store has just advertised for a sales assistant and you want to apply for the job.

Write a letter to the store manager. In the letter, include:

      • Why you want the position
      • Your previous experience in retail
      • When you are available for an interview

Write at least 150 words


Practice question 2

Your friend has asked you for a recommendation for somewhere local to eat out. You have recently had a beautiful birthday meal in a local Italian restaurant.

Write a letter to your friend to recommend the Italian restaurant. In your letter, include:

      • The name of the Italian restaurant
      • What you particularly liked about it
      • Who you went there with

Write at least 150 words

 

Task 2

Practice question 1

In many countries, the cost of living is increasing at a higher rate than wages.

What are some of the problems associated with this and what are some possible solutions?

Write at least 250 words


Practice question 2

Some people believe that criminal behaviour is learned, while others believe it is genetic.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Write at least 250 words

 

ACADEMIC VERSION

Task 1

Practice question 1

The table below shows data about three different Apple shops in the UK. 

Summarise the information by identifying and reporting on the main points and make comparisons where necessary.

Write at least 150 words.


Practice question 2

The graph below illustrates the average rainfall (in mm) and temperature (in ºC) in London, UK, per month.

Summarise the main points from the data and make comparisons where necessary.

Write at least 150 words.

Task 2

Practice question 1

There is a growing number of people who see a doctor for minor ailments, such as a sore throat. Some people believe they have a right to be assessed by a medical practitioner regardless of the problem. Others argue that some minor illnesses do not need to be assessed by a professional and are best treated at home with regular medications.

Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion. Use personal experiences where necessary.

Write at least 250 words.


Practice question 2

Some countries are beginning to legalise the use of some recreational drugs, such as cannabis. It is believed the legalisation will have a positive effect on the safety of the drug.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of legalising recreational drugs? Give reasons for your answer and use examples where necessary.

Write at least 250 words.

Make sure you practice lots of questions! The more practice questions you complete, the better you will become at answering them!

Don’t forget to use a stopwatch to time yourself. Remember, Task 1 should take no longer than 20 minutes and Task 2 shouldn’t take longer than 40 minutes.
